“I thought you might be running low on snacks by now.”

Renee gaped at the man standing at the front door and waited for a punch line, because surely this was just a joke, right? What else could explain the appearance of Garrett Fortune looking freshly showered, dressed in a pair of baggy, cognac-colored corduroy trousers and a dark blue sweater, accessorized by a way-too-sexy grin, a flashlight and what appeared to be a…picnic basket?

She glanced at her attire and was thankful for the power outage, because her ensemble was decidedly less appropriate for visitation—black drawstring sweatpants and a voluminous white, long-sleeved, scooped-neck tunic of similar fabric. Accessorized by thick, white athletic socks, her outfit was the picture of vacation slobbery.

And suddenly, for some odd reason, Renee wished that she had packed something a little less slobbery. Like maybe one of those filmy lace teddies, the kind she’d never bought because she suspected they itched something awful, but she’d always wondered if maybe, in the long run, you didn’t care that they itched because you didn’t have them on that long, anyway.

Not that Renee was a big expert on revealing lingerie, but seeing she was about to become a married woman, she might do well to buy one or two articles of the negligee persuasion. Of course when she reminded herself that it would be Lyle, not Garrett, who’d be seeing her in such outfits, her sudden shopping spree didn’t seem quite so pressing anymore.

And who did she think she was, anyway, entertaining such galloping thoughts—about lingerie, no less—in front of Garrett Fortune?

“Renee?”

The sound of her name uttered in that rough, masculine voice jarred her from her bizarre musings, and she shook her head quickly to clear it. Unfortunately, those bizarre musings refused to clear completely, because all she could keep thinking about was being scantily clad with Garrett Fortune.

Oh, dear.

“What?” she replied, still marveling at his appearance, barely recognizing her own voice in that quietly uttered word. Since when did she sound so much like Kathleen Turner?

“Are you okay?” he asked, softly enough to pull her gaze to his face.

Ooh, bad idea.

Because his face, like the rest of him, was way too yummy for her comfort. He’d obviously just shaved, because his skin was smooth and ruddy and fragrant, and his eyes… She bit back the sigh that always bubbled up whenever she gazed too deeply into Garrett’s eyes. His eyes were the color of brandy, and every bit as intoxicating. And at the moment, they were lit with something she dared not contemplate for too long.

“I’m fine,” she lied. “What are you doing here?”

He lifted the picnic basket, lowering the flashlight’s beam onto it for her inspection. “I thought you might be out of snacks by now,” he repeated. “I noticed you didn’t go anywhere in your car today.”

She hunched her shoulders a little anxiously. “No, it was too nice a day to leave the ranch.”

“It rained,” he reminded her.

Not that Renee needed a reminder. She’d spent the better
